Hidden in the countryside of the Luberon, surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation, Château de Pradines is one of those places.
Located in Grambois, in the Vaucluse, this historic family estate has recently opened its doors to a limited number of weddings and private celebrations ; making it a particularly special setting for couples looking for an elegant destination wedding in the South of France.
I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful celebration here for an American couple living in London, alongside Sidonie Vidal.
A day filled with that particular mix I love so much : people travelling from different parts of the world, the warmth of a summer celebration in Provence, beautiful details and, above all, real moments unfolding naturally.
GETTIN MARRIED AT CHATEAU DE PRADINES
Château de Pradines is located in Grambois, in the heart of the Luberon, one of the most iconic areas of Provence.
The estate stretches across more than 15 hectares, combining the château itself with landscaped gardens, vineyards, olive trees, lavender, a French formal garden, rose garden, orchard and centuries-old trees. The property is listed as a French Historic Monument.
What I particularly loved as a photographer is the variety of atmospheres within one place.
You can move from an intimate moment beneath the trees to a cocktail overlooking the medieval village of Grambois, followed by dinner on the château terrace as the light changes over the Luberon.
And all of that without losing the feeling of being in one coherent place.
a WEDDING VENUE MADE FOR OUTDOOR CELEBRATIONS
One of the greatest strengths of a Château de Pradines wedding is undoubtedly its outdoor spaces.
Château de Pradines is part of the Roland Paix Collection, a selection of exceptional venues brought together by Maison Roland Paix, a renowned high-end caterer and event specialist in Provence.
This expertise in hosting gastronomy feels particularly at home at Pradines. The estate offers beautiful possibilities for outdoor celebrations, from cocktails in the garden to long summer dinners beneath the century-old plane trees. The château can host seated dinners for up to 150 guests.
From a photographic perspective, this creates something I particularly value : movement.
Instead of spending the entire wedding in one reception space, guests naturally move through the estate as the day unfolds.
The ceremony, cocktail, dinner and evening can each have their own visual identity while remaining part of the same story.
THE LIGHT OF CHATEAU de PRADINES
For me, choosing a wedding venue is never only about architecture.
It is also about light.
Stone façades, shaded gardens, open landscapes and the warmer tones of Provence create completely different possibilities throughout the day.
As the sun gets lower, the terraces and façades take on a softer, warmer quality ; exactly the kind of changing natural light I love working with.
Rather than imposing the same aesthetic on every part of a wedding, my approach is to observe what the place and the moment are giving me.
Sometimes that means clean editorial portraits.
Sometimes movement and blur.
Sometimes imperfect, spontaneous photographs that simply preserve exactly how a moment felt.
DOCUMENTARY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN PROVENCE
My approach to wedding photography sits somewhere between documentary photography and an editorial eye.
I want things to happen rather than create them. So I am observing and anticipating everything.
The conversations happening away from the couple. A hand resting on someone's shoulder. Children running through dinner. Friends laughing before the ceremony. The few quiet minutes just before everything begins.
Those photographs may not always seem like the most important ones on the day itself.
Years later, they often are.
And a place like Château de Pradines offers an incredible canvas for this approach ; beautiful enough to create striking photographs, but alive enough to allow the story to remain about the people rather than simply the venue.
AN IDeal venue for a destination wedding in south of france
For couples travelling from abroad, the Luberon offers much more than a beautiful backdrop for one day.
A wedding here can become an entire experience in Provence.
Château de Pradines itself lends itself particularly well to celebrations extending beyond the wedding day, with spaces that can accommodate different moments throughout a wedding weekend. The château specifically highlights possibilities such as brunches around the pool as well as receptions throughout its gardens and grounds.
For international couples, I particularly love photographing this kind of multi-day celebration.
The welcome dinner has a completely different energy from the wedding itself. And by the following day, everyone has forgotten about the camera.
Together, those different moments create a much richer photographic archive of the entire experience.
